Restricted Shoulder and Tennis Elbow

My work is very manual and involves lots of different movements, from lifting and carrying, to reaching and holding things tightly. Over time, my shoulder had become increasingly problematic to the point where any movement was limited and painful.

Alongside this, my elbow had started to become painful, and most noticeably when I gripped anything. Even a handshake became impossible without causing pain!

I tried physio and other treatments, such as heat and ice packs, and was taking painkillers daily to manage the pain – something I didn’t want to do. Nothing was working.

Having reached the point where my job was becoming unmanageable, I was told about Bowen Therapy by a friend, who recommended Juan at Paloma to me. I hadn’t heard of Bowen before and was a little sceptical about whether it could help, but my GP had told me that tennis elbow and shoulder pain could take up to two years to heal itself!!

Juan was very caring and understanding of my situation, and reassured me that although shoulder injuries can take a long time to heal, that Bowen was likely to improve my situation. He was right! Immediately after the first session I was able to shake his hand and lift my arm above my shoulder level without pain – an hour earlier this would have been impossible.

Juan treated me over several weeks (with gaps in between) and after each session my tennis elbow and painful shoulder continued to improve. It’s now 6-months later and I am completely pain free and able to do all that my job requires without any problems. I still can’t believe just how much things have changed.

I can’t recommend Juan highly enough. I’ve since been back for further treatment on my lower back, as I pulled a muscle working with heavy equipment. Again, after just one session, I feel much better and believe my back will be back to normal in no time.

Runner’s Knee and Shin Splints

I thoroughly enjoyed and benefitted from my Bowen Therapy with Juan. The therapy itself identified issues with my feet and with my hip. I had initially booked in to address runners knee and shin splints. Juan treated my hip, knee and ankle. I had only positive side effects from this and found myself energised each week in between sessions. After completing the therapy, I’ve got back into my running, with the barefoot trainers Juan recommended and had zero issues with my knee or shins.

As a therapist, Juan was attentive and professional. He highlighted posture issues and addressed them with the appropriate therapy. I felt comfortable throughout our sessions and highly trusted and valued his nutritional and lifestyle advice, which I have followed and of which I am now seeing the positive benefits. I couldn’t recommend him highly enough.

Tender Coccyx

Some years ago, I fell on some ice and landed hard on my coccyx. Following this accident, whenever I went over a bump while driving my car, or sat down on a particularly hard seat, I experienced a sharp pain around that area. I believed that it was a situation I would have to live with, even though it affected my quality of life, making me hesitant to try certain activities or go to certain places.

A friend recommended Bowen Therapy, so I contacted Juan at Paloma, who was very happy to see if he could help me. He explained how the coccyx is a very sensitive area, connected directly to the spinal cord, and that’s why any injury can be very painful, and even cause severe headaches or migraines for some people. In the first session, he did an initial treatment to balance my body before directly treating my coccyx in the second session.

After only the one coccyx treatment, the pain had disappeared! I was driving a few days afterwards and hit an unseen hole in the road and noticed that I had no pain. Previously, this would have resulted in sharp shooting pain.

Juan was very professional and made me feel very much at ease. As a woman, I felt very reassured and comfortable in Juan’s competent care. I would recommend him to anyone with any injury, and especially for coccyx pain.

Arthritis of the Hip and Joint Inflammation

With a preference for holistic and alternative therapy, I was keen to explore Bowen to help relieve some of the pain caused by severe hip arthritis and joint inflammation in various parts of my body.

I welcomed an opportunity to form a case study for Juan who has demonstrated a real passion for his work and a genuine interest in my wellbeing.

Despite his relatively short clinical experience, Juan has adopted a very professional manner, balancing confidence and knowledge with a very personal and simplistic approach.

There are definite signs that my body is responding to the treatments, and I’m looking forward to working further with Juan on my journey towards better health. It’s been a very encouraging introduction to Bowen Therapy.

Old Knee Injury Still Causing Pain

I was introduced to Bowen therapy by Juan and was very interested, as I’ve tried a number of different treatments over the years to deal with a longstanding injury.

Following a series of knee operations (broken patella) I’d just learned to live with the pain, both in my knee and connected hip and lower back. Ibuprofen became the painkiller of choice, however I wasn’t happy with the known side-effects of taking it regularly.  Also, any impact sports (e.g. football) would cause me acute pain for a day or so afterwards, in turn having a detrimental effect on sleep.

It’s early days, and I know this type of treatment will take time, however the signs so far are positive.  Straight after treatment I definitely feel a loosening in the joints/muscles in and around my knee, hip and lower back accompanied by short-term pain relief.

Juan has all the qualities of being a good Bowen therapist, as his knowledge of the anatomy and his bed-side manner provide a very relaxed environment conducive to the therapeutic process.

My hope is that over time I will start to experience more sustained periods of improved mobility and pain reduction enabling me to enjoy the full effects of Bowen Therapy.
